NFCA Book Review

Who are you? As a caregiver, it’s a question that’s well worth asking, one that Dr. Rackner deals with head on in this powerful, easy-to-stash-‘n-carry book. “Oh sure,” you say, “Who cares who I am? My parent/child/spouse is the one who needs help!” True, your loved one is the center of your focus, but are you losing yourself in the caregiving process?

While many caregivers don’t even make time for exercise, let alone for any “navel gazing,” Dr. Rackner makes a strong argument in favor of figuring out who you are in the caregiving space. As she says, “The secret to successful caregiving turns on your ability to contribute from your strengths and gifts and enlist the help of others who contribute in areas where you are weak.”

So it’s time to ask: What are your strengths and passions? What’s your temperament? There is no “right” answer. But asking for and getting help — help that works for you — can certainly make the caregiving process run more smoothly. Hate grocery shopping but love cooking? Ask a friend to pick some things up at the store in exchange for a home cooked meal. Dread organizing mom’s house? Ask your sibling, the neatnik, for help. What’s hard for you may be easy for someone else.

We all have our own ways of handling caregiving responsibilities. Dr. Rackner’s advice, “Be who you are, know what you know and do what you need to do,” will help you find the caregiving solutions that work for you. You can then stop counting the moments and, instead, make the moments count.
